Like many things, the best approach is often prevention.  With this in mind, we strongly recommend the following in relation to keeping your pet safe and sound:

Micro-chipping

Get your pet microchipped.  Most vets will microchip your pet for a competitive rate. Note, make sure you update your personal contact details when moving house!

Buy a collar and tag

Make sure your pet wears a collar and owner’s tag with your owner contact details engraved

Home and garden maintenance

Keep all gates and entrances securely locked. Pet proof your back yard so your pet is secure and safely confined.  Dogs love to dig, so make sure you routinely check your fencing for new escape routes.

Travelling with your pets

Always use an approved carrier when travelling with your cat.  Cats can be easily startled by loud noises and run and hide; this is particularly dangerous when you are in non-familiar surrounds. Always have your dog on a leash; a lost dog in unfamiliar surrounds is a lost dog (they very rarely manage to find their way home).

Take some photos

Have some fun and take some good photos of your pets, just in case the worse happens and they go missing.  Good close up photos of your pets face and unique markings are always handy.
