Support the Cat Protection Society

Sleeping KittenAn introduction to the Cat Protection Society of NSW and the great work that is being done for cats in our community.

Recently I have been chatting to the folks at the Cat Protection Society (CPS) of NSW, here in Australia. They are a charity run organisation that was formed in 1958 by a small group of cat lovers concerned about the plight of homeless cats. Since then the CPS have focused on a wide range of cat protection related campaigns including the promotion of desexing and helping find homes for stray cats.

The CPS today

The CPS continues to advocate desexing as the key to preventing the cruelty of abandonment and euthanasia, and provides a discount desexing service, as well as running a shelter for surrendered and abandoned cats in Newtown, NSW. Their mission is quite simple:

“To work with the community at all levels for the mutual benefit of cats, people and the natural environment.”

They do this by:

  • Helping cats in need find loving and responsible homes
  • Improving the quality of life for cats by educating the community about socially and environmentally responsible cat care
  • Actively working with government and non-government agencies to promote and improve cat welfare
  • Recognising the unique relationship between people and cats (I am hoping this is a given for the reader’s of Buzz Pet!).

Bottom of the line is this readers - the CPS literally help thousands of cats each year, all from funds obtained via the volunteer run CPS Op Shop, donations, bequests and sponsorship.

So how can you help?

Well I am glad you asked! Buzz Pet readers can help the CPS by joining as a member, becoming a volunteer, making a tax-deductible donation, remembering the CPS in your Will or even just buying your cat food and other cat products from their cattery (if you are in NSW), and shopping at their Op Shop. And remember that the CPS can also help you by providing cat care advice and information, discount cat desexing, and of course, beautiful cats and kittens for adoption.

If you would like further information, you can contact the CPS via their website or call them on 02 9519 7201.

Dog-friendly Park Location Service

Dog-friendly Park Location Service

Australian media company Sensis have recently teamed up with local Victorian premium pet food producer 4Legs to launch a great new service on their improved Whereis website. The new service provides information on dog-friendly parks listed on their maps, allowing users of Whereis to search and view a selected region (E.g. a suburb) and identify (by way of small paw-print icons) where dog friendly parks are located including whether the park allows off-lead walking.

At first glance I believe this to be a useful addition to the tool set of the Whereis website, particularly if the user of the site is new to a region and is travelling with their four-legged friend - very handy to find a suitable park to let your dog off its’ leash. Check out the new service and let me know what you think.
